Day 2

As a continuation from day 1 of our Jeju trip, the second day saw us exploring the southern region of Jeju — Seogwipo.

1. Cafe Aewol Monsant 몽상

Need I explain any further who is behind this cafe? G-Dragon (GD) from the famed Korean idol group Big Bang of course. The cafe is really out of the way and it was quite a long drive along the coastline. Not just because it is opened by a celebrity, the cafe is also distinct for its instagramable exterior glass ceiling-to-floor windows.
A structure out in the middle of nowhere facing the sea is indeed charming.

Along the way coastline all the way from Jeju Si.

Haenyeo, women divers, play a significant role in Jeju. In the olden days when men are out at sea fishing, women are left on this islands for months without their husbands. But these independent and strong-willed women strived to improve their livelihood by fishing out in the sea on their own, using no special diving equipment and by simply holding their breaths, with a pair of goggles and a round ball like tube to keep the balance under the water.
These women are strong in that sense and some still practice today. If you are in luck you may be able to catch them. But for us, we mainly spotted them miles away while travelling along the coastline.

I mentioned Hallabong, Jeju Tangerines are the prized possession of Jeju.

A Cafe?

We made Cafe Aewol Monsant as our first stop when the sun was just up and beaming. On first look, the cafe looked nothing outstanding and felt like an abandoned building of sorts.  In fact, it stands alone on its own in a deserted neighbourhood among other estates/bungalows which were probably abandoned and evacuated.

The Glasshouse

The welcoming facade came after rounding the corner. Here, so this is the glass ceiling everyone has been clamouring to take some artistic shots from.
This is really one of the rare places you will see a lot of locals coming to — in Jeju.

Courtesy of my agile dad, he managed to capture a shot for me. Tons of people will be walking passed you so, well, take a chance and try to capture some awesome shots. Patience is the key. A bit of luck will help too.

When you have had enough of the chill and breeze, head indoors for a hot cuppa and cake.

The cafe's interior is skewed towards industrial, cold concrete and steels.

The Cuppa

The cup sleeve was very delicate with a velvety touch, which I kept.
The coffee left a strong aromatic aftertaste and was thick and delivered its purpose. Glad that this cafe's not just another over-hyped celebrity cafe. At least they served some authentic coffee.

💡 In case you haven't noticed, the exterior can be peered through from the insides. whatever you have been posing on the outside, well, people inside can see you... 😂

2. Jeju Green Tea Field

This Green Tea field is just across the road from the Osulloc Museum ( where most people will park and head to).
I would have missed this place if I haven't asked. Totally would not have bothered to look out across the road. But that's where the gems are. The lush green plots of green tea plantations!

Osulloc Tea Museum

For the ladies who are in touch with K-Beauty, this place needs not much introduction. It was the first tea museum opened by skincare conglomerate Amore Pacific and sells a range related Korean tea products, food, exhibition centre and various scenic spots where you can taste tea-related products and skincare brands such as Innisfree.
Admission: Free

3. Biennale 2017

As I stumbled upon the Biennale in Jeju which coincides with my dates, we also went to one of the locations just to take a look.

This art installation was brought about by the late artist Kim Haegon worked on this structure using huge amounts of flags and fabric. The golden flags swaying in the wind symbolises the birth of a single wheat seed. It is through this work that the artist hopes to heal the unfortunate war history at the Alddreu AIrfield.

Alddreu Airfield

In the background is the Alddreu Airfield, a former Japanese Navy Air Services and United States Air Force. 19 aircraft bunkers still remained spread out across the vast airfield.
Opened to the public all year round.

If you walk nearer to the bunk...

...the colors represented a gesture of peace can be seen, tied to the aircraft.

4. Oedolgae

We left for the last stop in our itinerary. There really isn't much to explain as it is simply a rock formation with legends of a lady praying for her husband out at the sea. Free entry.

It was nearing sunset and the backlit light was so strong, I could not capture many details.

5. Cheonjeyeon Falls

A rather short/ small waterfall which you can stroll all the way in, pass the man-made parks and sights from the entrance. To us, it was nothing particularly spectacular but there were loads of tourists clamouring for a shot in front of the waterfall. As foreigners, we took a compulsory shot. Otherwise, the whole "garden" was just more of a leisure man-made relaxing sanctuary ( besides the waterfall that is).
Give this place a miss if you run out of time.

6. Dine in At HweolJips

The waters of Jeju are filled with all kinds of fishes that fishermen sourced from. Choose from a wide variety of yellowtail fish, sea bream, hairtail fish, mackerel, coral fish, sea urchin, abalone and so much more, many of which we were not even familiar with.
However, upon some recommendations, we ordered the Spicy Hairtail Fish which was sizzling spicy. and definitely not for the faint-hearted. I dare say the fish texture was awesome, fresh and sweet with spongy flesh and I dare say that they taste even better than the seafood at Busan (LINK) ( though known as a fishery port). SO if you are in Jeju, please head to any seafood eateries!
